The king of the woods is backWisent World Wittgenstein

Years ago, the shy forest dwellers were threatened with extinction - as part of a species conservation project, the bison have returned to Wittgenstein. The initiator of this exciting project is Richard Prince of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg. He had a vision of free-roaming bisons in his forests.

A group of bisons lives in an area of about 10,000 hectares. The rather shy animals can hardly be met by hikers. For this reason the bison wilderness on the Rothaarsteig was created for visitors on an area of about 20 hectares.

With a bit of luck you can observe the giants at close quarters. Marvel at the impressive bisons in the "Wisent Wilderness on the Rothaarsteig"!
